Portales woman charged with vehicular homicide

Aug. 20 – Bionca Martinez, 24, of Portales, pulled out Thursday night from the Roosevelt County Detention Center after being charged with vehicular homicide in the death of Laura Fernandez, 35, of Portales Tuesday night.

According to an arrest affidavit filed by Portales Police Detective Sergeant Nikolas Sanchez, Martinez, driving a Nissan Altima, put down a stop sign at the intersection of South Avenue D and West 18th Street in Portales and crashed into a Ford Focus driven by Fernandez around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.

When police and emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene, Fernandez was pronounced dead.

Martinez and his passenger, Haily Galindo, were transported to Roosevelt General Hospital where Sanchez spoke to the two.

Martinez told Sanchez she had a drink before driving, an “alcoholic lemonade shot drink,” around 7 p.m., court records show.

According to the arrest certificate:

Sanchez questioned the two women about other alcohol consumption, as a container of Four Loko malt drink was found in Martinez’s vehicle.

Martinez maintained that all she had to drink was the previously mentioned “alcoholic lemonade shot drink”.

Sanchez wrote in her report that Martinez said she and Galindo drove around Portales.

Martinez told Sanchez before the collision that she was heading north on SR206 toward Portales when she ran the stop sign at D and 18th. She told Sanchez that the other car also had the stop sign for westbound 18th.

Sanchez reported that investigators studying the crash scene determined that Martinez would have approached the intersection at “high speed.”

According to a press release from Portales Police Chief Christopher Williams, after Martinez was released from the hospital, she was arrested and taken to the Roosevelt County Detention Center for vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. alcohol and/or drugs.

Martinez’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 14.
