Christine Wing

RUMFORD – Christine Wing passed away on May 2, 2022, after a long and valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Chris was born in Portland on July 24, 1948 to Carlton and Vivian Wing. After high school, she attended Carnegie Melon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She then moved to Rumford where she spent over 35 years as an art teacher at Rumford High School.

Chris continued to develop his art by taking graduate courses at Skidmore College. After her summer school there, she returned to Maine with renewed enthusiasm and ideas for her own work and to share with her students at Mountain Valley High School (Rumford). Chris enjoyed incorporating local industrial scenes into his paintings, embracing the spirit of the paper mills around him. She also illustrated a book, “Sage of the Anasazi: A Dream Journey Through Time to the Ancient Ones of the Southwest”, written by Timothy A. Buzzard.

Chris had a substantial interest in promoting the arts in Rumford and was actively involved in the development of the Pennacook Art Center, a non-profit arts cooperative allowing local artists in the Rumford area to exhibit their work.

Chris has produced artwork in a variety of mediums including encaustic wax paint, oil, watercolor, and even took an airbrush course at the request of her students so that she can teach them the technique. She enjoyed working in 3D, salvaging window frames, tool parts, scrap metal and scrap wood to create works of art that she happily displayed in her home. She creatively incorporated nature into her works.

Chris enjoyed traveling with his mother to see Peggy and the grandchildren in Michigan. She liked to send them books and art supplies. She was happy to be included in the family festivities of her two daughters-in-law and their families. She was the grandmother welcomed at their end-of-year celebrations and the birthdays of grandchildren and even some great-grandchildren. She enjoyed bringing festively decorated birthday cakes to birthday celebrations.

Chris enjoyed cooking, eating with friends, wine making, movie nights, Kentucky Derby nights, Easter with his mother at the Portland Country Club, Wing family events, live music – attending the National Folk Festival in Bangor and camping at Red Barn Campground. She loved going to the North Atlantic Blues Festival, Maine Music Society events and loved art museums – wherever she could find them! She was a diverse and creative woman.

She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Hafiani (Fouad), her stepdaughters Amy Govea (Miguel) and Amanda Leathers (Joey); as well as numerous grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; and brothers Michael (Nancy) and Jeffrey (Nancy) Wing.

A celebration of life will be held at Thibault Funeral Home in Rumford on June 2 at 2 p.m. All are invited to attend.
