The International Food Protection Association (IAFP), a leading organization of food safety scientists and professionals, and Elseviera global leader in publishing research and analyzing information, are thrilled to announce a new partnership to publish the Food Protection Journal (JFP), the flagship journal of the IAFP. The journal will move from a hybrid subscription model to a Gold Open Access publication, making articles immediately and permanently available for anyone to read, download, copy and distribute. It will be hosted on Elsevier’s industry-leading online platform, ScienceDirectfrom January 2023.

The mission of the IAFP is to provide food safety professionals around the world with a forum to exchange information on the protection of the food supply. According to the IAFP, its decision to publish JFP with Elsevier was driven in part by the editorial board’s desire to make its essential research open to everyone and to reach the widest audience across its entire community. This conversion to open access publishing aligns with IAFP’s core values by accelerating the pace of research and encouraging sharing and collaboration across disciplines.

“After an exploration and review of our publishing options, the IAFP Board elected to work with Elsevier based on its extensive experience in transitioning from subscription journals to fully open access and the strength of their technology capabilities, including their well-known platform that will help increase the discovery and visibility of JFP contents. This agreement will reduce the cost of open access publishing for members and non-members alike,” explained IAFP Executive Director David Tharp.

Launched in 1937, JFP has a long and storied history as the premier food safety journal for professionals in academia, industry and regulatory authorities worldwide. Its global community of authors and readers recognizes the journal’s position as the high-quality and authoritative voice for publishing important applied and basic research articles and review articles, for everyone and by everybody. Its scope and coverage has evolved over the years to align with new developments in the field, ranging from reporting on emerging scientific trends to providing cutting-edge knowledge.

JFP will continue under the direction of the editor-in-chief Panagiotis N. SkandamisPhD, professor of food microbiology and food quality control and food hygiene at the Agricultural University of Athens, who has served as scientific editor of the journal since 2018.

“The editorial board, scientific editors and I are extremely excited to partner with Elsevier to publish JFP“said Professor Skandamis.”JFP has always been a team effort with valuable contributions from many active participants. Now we will have additional support from Elsevier, a leading scientific publisher, as we join their family of esteemed journals. I am confident that this collaboration will further enhance the reputation of the journal and maintain the high level of scientific contributions in the new era of food safety. Behalf JFPEditors, editorial team, critics and authors, I welcome our new partner.”

“We are delighted to welcome the IAFP to Elsevier and to add its prestigious journal to our food science portfolio,” commented Morgane Dagot, Editor at Elsevier. “We recognize that Elsevier’s commitment to open science and experience transitioning journals to gold open access were key factors in selecting the IAFP. We look forward to working alongside the society and the journal to successfully transition to full open access status, expanding their global reach, and supporting their mission of protecting the world’s food supply.”

As one of the fastest growing open access publishers in the world, nearly all of Elsevier’s 2,700 journals support open access publishing, including 600 open access journals. In 2021, Elsevier published 119,000 open access or paid articles, an increase of more than 46% compared to 2020.
