Jacob & Drinkwater | The music diary

South West-based duo Jacob & Drinkwater have been called ‘standout new folk’ by BBC6 Music, with their live show described as ‘intense and haunting’ by Folk Radio UK. The duo formed in 2014, playing their first gig together at the famous Glastonbury Festival.

The dynamic and emotionally charged performance of the duo with all its energy, musical chemistry and spontaneity has drawn comparisons to the virtuoso duo of John Martyn and Danny Thompson. Jacob’s breathtaking voice never fails to captivate, delivering many stunning moments; the fluidity and precision of his finger-picking underpinned by Drinkwater’s nimbly rhythmic double bass; sometimes gently soaring, haunting, punchy and driving, the layers of depth form a perfect strain. The added complement of soulful vocal harmonies completes the mix nicely.

Jacob & Drinkwater’s latest album ‘More Notes from the Field’ – released October 2021, is an exploration of the theme of friendship and connection through song. Written and developed remotely between the duo’s gated homes in Bydgoszcz, Poland, and Stroud, Gloucestershire, Tobias & Lukas have achieved their most ambitious recording to date. It received rave reviews from Folk Radio UK, Fatea and Folking, was selected by Americana magazine ‘No Depression’ on a ‘best of 2021’ list and included in Folk Radio UK’s Top 100 Albums of 2021. ‘Plus Notes from the Field’ was described as “..seductive, lyrical and perfectly tuned..” by Songlines magazine in a rave review.
