Graduation week is like vacation time for Albuquerque Public Schools staff. This year, the best gift is to celebrate in person.

After two years of graduation ceremonies limited to virtual or outdoor events by the COVID-19 pandemic, seniors will again be able to walk in person to receive their high school diploma this year. Most graduation ceremonies take place this week.

For larger schools, such as Valley, La Cueva, and Eldorado High Schools, ceremonies will be held at the Tingley Coliseum, located at Expo New Mexico, or at the state fairgrounds.

The district will hold two to three ceremonies per day at the Colosseum Monday through Saturday. The ceremonies will take place at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., including two at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Saturday.

Officials said smaller ceremonies, such as for students at New Futures and Freedom High Schools, will be held at the Berna Facio Professional Development Complex at 3315 Louisiana Blvd. NOT.

One to two will take place from Monday to Thursday at the professional development center.

Vocational college and high school seniors graduated just over a week ahead of everyone else, on April 29.

APS said its graduation rate has steadily increased for the past seven classes, from 61.7% for the class of 2015 to 75.7% for the class of 2021. Excluding charter schools, on which APS said it has “limited academic control”, the rate in 2021 is an “unprecedented” 80.3%.

“It’s because of (the) efforts of people in the schools,” Superintendent Scott Elder said in a video posted on the APS website. “Families agree and say, ‘No, I want my child to graduate.’ They recognize that it makes a difference in their future life and that it is so important. And so I’m really happy to get here and I hope we continue to improve.

APS spokeswoman Monica Armenta said the district does not yet have a graduation rate for the class of 2022. Some students will graduate over the summer after recovering their credits, said Elder.
