FBI, RIP? | VICTOR DAVIS HANSON

The FBI is dissolving before our eyes into a rogue security service similar to those in Eastern Europe during the Cold War.

Take the FBI’s deliberately asymmetric law enforcement. This week, the bureau made a surprise raid on former President Donald Trump’s home – a historic first.

A massive phalanx of FBI agents broke into the Trump residence while he was away from home to confiscate his personal property, safe and files. This was all about a presidential papers archive conflict common to many former presidents. Agents raided the entire house, including the former first lady’s wardrobe.

Note that we are less than 90 days away from a midterm election, and this was not just a raid but a political act.

The Democratic Party is expected to suffer historic losses. Trump was set to announce his 2024 presidential bid. In many polls, he remains the Republican frontrunner for the nomination – and well ahead of President Joe Biden in a putative 2024 rematch.

In 2016, then-FBI Director James Comey announced that candidate Hillary Clinton was guilty of destroying subpoenaed emails — a probable crime related to her tenure as secretary of state. Yet he almost promised that she would not be prosecuted given her status as a presidential candidate.

As for the targeting of presidential candidates, Trump was impeached in 2020 apparently for delaying military aid to Ukraine by asking Ukrainian officials to further investigate the clearly corrupt Biden family – given that Joe Biden at the time was likely a possible presidential opponent in 2020.

The FBI has become a personal recovery service for the incorrigible Biden family. He suppressed, for political purposes, information about Hunter Biden’s missing laptop on the eve of the 2020 election. Previously, the FBI had never pursued Hunter’s fraudulently registered firearm, his mysterious income foreigners, his criminal crack use or his regular employment of foreign prostitutes.

Yet, in a pre-dawn raid just before the 2020 election, the FBI targeted the home of journalist James O’Keefe on the grounds that someone had passed him Ashley Biden’s lost and sinister diary, the Biden’s wayward daughter.

Repeatedly, Stasi-style, the FBI publicly chained Trump’s economic adviser Peter Navarro, invaded the office of Trump’s legal adviser Rudy Giuliani, and sent a SWAT team to surround the ally’s home. of Trump, Roger Stone. Meanwhile, terrorists and cartels cross an open border with impunity.

Last week, FBI Director Christopher Wray cut short his evasive testimony before Congress. He claimed he had to leave for a critical meeting – only to use his FBI Gulfstream luxury jet to get to his favorite vacation spot in the Adirondacks. Wray took over from disgraced Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe. The latter admitted to having repeatedly lied to federal investigators and signed a fraudulent FBI application in secret federal court. He faced no legal consequences.

McCabe, remember, was also the trusted man in the Hillary Clinton softball email investigation — while his wife was a political candidate and the recipient of thousands of dollars from a closely knit political action committee. linked to the Clinton family.

McCabe succeeded the disgraced Comey. On 245 occasions, Comey claimed under oath before the House Intelligence Committee that he had no recollection or knowledge of key issues regarding his tenure. With impunity, he leaked confidential FBI notes to the media.

Comey succeeded Robert Mueller. Implausibly, Mueller swore under oath that he had no knowledge of either the Steele dossier or Fusion GPS, the company that commissioned Christopher Steele to compile the dossier. But those were the two catalysts that drove his entire special investigation into the Russian collusion hoax.

FBI legal counsel Kevin Clinesmith has been convicted of a felony for altering an FBI warrant application to spy on an innocent Carter Page.

The FBI, according to Comey’s public bragging, bragged about catching Gen. Michael Flynn, the designated national security adviser, in its Russian Crossfire Hurricane collusion hoax.

As special counsel, Mueller then fired two of his top investigators — Lisa Page and Peter Strzok — for inappropriate personal and professional behavior. He then staggered their outings to mask their collaborative misdeeds.

Mueller’s team suppressed critical cellphone evidence under subpoena that may well have revealed systemic FBI-related bias.

The FBI interferes with national elections and distorts them. He hires complete fraudsters as informants who are far worse than his targets. It humiliates or exempts the government and elected officials based on their policy. It violates the civil liberties of individual American citizens.

Top FBI officials now routinely deceive Congress. They erased or altered court evidence and subpoenaed. They illegally leak confidential documents to the media. And they lied under oath to federal investigators.

The agency has become dangerous to Americans and an existential threat to their democracy and rule of law. The FBI should distribute its investigative responsibilities to other government investigative agencies that have not yet lost the public’s trust.
