Fall in love: September events leapfrog into fall

Fall doesn’t officially arrive until September 22, but events in west-central Illinois aren’t waiting to embrace a new season.

The big activities of the month begin Friday, September 10 with Greene County Days and Arenzville Burgoo.

Greene County Days

In Greene County, the Greene County Historical and Genealogical Society has added tours and food to the county’s annual Greene County Days program.

Food, entertainment and shopping will be available beginning at 11 a.m. Friday in the courtyard of the historic Lee-Baker-Hodges Building on the northeast corner of Courthouse Square. Pianist Jeanne Coates will also perform.

The Lee-Baker-Hodges building, showcasing the 1820s period, will be open for tours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and September 10. It houses a genealogical library, museum rooms, and artifacts from the early days of Greene County.

Among the exhibits will be photos of the village of Eldred and a loose-leaf notebook of the Greene County Hospice and its residents.

Books featuring the story will also be available for purchase and proceeds will go towards building improvements and maintenance.

The Greene County Days Queen Pageant kicks off at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at Roodhouse City Park in Roodhouse.

Arenzville Burgoo

The Arenzville Burgoo will also begin Friday with kettle service starting at 7 a.m. Other events, including the Little Miss and Mr. Burgoo pageants and the Junior Miss and Miss Arenzville Burgoo pageants, will take place on Friday evening.

The September 10 events will also begin with kettle service at 7 a.m. A 5K walk/run, sand volleyball, children’s competition, tractor pull and entertainment will also take place throughout the day. The evening will conclude with performances by the White Lightning Band at 6:15 p.m. and Drake White at 8 p.m.


The Jacksonville Rotary Club Oktoberfest will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on September 17 at the Morgan County Fairgrounds. The event will have its traditional stein endurance challenges, a sack tournament, a parade of dressed dogs and the Wiener Dog Race.

Music, food and house beer will also be available.

Tickets, which are $4 in advance or $5 at the door, are available from any Rotary Club member or at County Market in Jacksonville.

Motor show and evening cruise

The 38th Annual Community Park Car Show and Fall Cruise Party will also take place on September 17, with the show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park and the cruise from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on a route that runs along West Morton Avenue from Main Street. at Lincoln Ave.

Steam Show and Fall Festival

Rounding out the month’s events will be the Prairie Land Heritage Museum Steam Show and Fall Festival. The show will take place on the grounds of the Prairie Land Heritage Museum from September 23-25.

Opening day will feature vendors, activities and entertainment starting at 10 a.m. The traditional ham and bean lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., or while supplies last.

The events on September 24 will take place at 7 a.m. with the classification and weighing of the traction of the old tractors. The tractor draw will begin at 10 a.m. Other activities, including rides and vendor sales, will begin at 9 a.m. The Tractor Parade will take place at 3 p.m. with a live concert on the grounds from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

September 25 will begin with worship services at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. at Liberty Church on the museum grounds. Daily activities will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. A golf cart and quilt drawing will take place at 4:30 p.m.

The cost is $10 for a wristband valid for all three days.

September 17

• Oktoberfest — Morgan County Fairgrounds, 12-7 p.m. Tickets are $4 in advance or $5 at the door.

September 22

• Hocus Pocus Fest — 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pike County Mercantile and various Pittsfield businesses. The list of participating stores is available via Picture Pittsfield Facebook page.

September 23

•Routt Homecoming — Parade at 1:15 pm along East State Street, around the plaza to College Avenue and back to Routt Catholic High School.

• Benefit for Emily (Large) Turner — 10 am at K’s Creek Golf and Kitchen 63 — Funds raised will be used to cover medical bills and expenses for Turner, who was recently diagnosed with liver cancer.

September 25

September 30

• Jacksonville High School Homecoming Parade — 4:00 pm The parade will move east on West State Street and around the downtown plaza.
