Many of his Bishop Gorman football teammates know their college destinations, but Jeremiah Vessel’s safety isn’t particularly rushed.
Vessel has 25 scholarship offers but did not disclose a shortlist as he said he wanted to keep an open mind. He used his teammates as resources throughout the process.
“Basically everyone is going through the same thing as me,” Vessel said. “It’s just that they’re engaged right now. I don’t rush because they are.
Vessel said he would take his decision seriously after he began making official visits. He’s planning trips to Memphis and upstate Mississippi, and his plan is to sign in December and be ready to join his future school in January.
To underscore just how loaded Gorman is, Vessel is tied for 10th in the state in composite rankings, and six of his teammates are ranked even or ahead of him.
The three highest-rated players are Gaels, and they’ve committed to Southern California (wide receiver Zachariah Branch), defending national champion Georgia (cornerback Justyn Rhett) and Oregon (safety Kodi Decambra).
It’s no surprise that the Valley’s most dominant program continues to recharge, and coach Brent Browner says social media and word of mouth play a huge role.
“We don’t have to go looking and finding anybody,” Browner said. “Kids have seen it so much on the internet that they just want to be here. I think the other thing too is that our kids are doing things outside of here. They’re going seven-on-seven and things like that. We have good kids. If you have a group of good kids, you want to be around that too.
Also taking his time
Vessel isn’t the only one not rushing his decision.
Desert Pines quarterback Marquis Roby is unlikely to commit until the December period so he can weigh all his options for February signing day, according to Jaguars coach Tico Rodriguez.
Roby, 13th in the state in the composite rankings, is highest in Bowling Green, eastern Washington and Grambling State. He won’t be taking any official visits until the end of the season, Rodriguez said.
